First performance of an Israeli Orchestra in Bayreuth: July 26, 2011

A standing ovation for the Israel Chamber Orchestra and its Music Director Roberto Paternostro for their historical first performance of music by Richard Wagner – and of “Hatikva”, Israel’s national anthem – in Bayreuth on 26 July 2011.

Bridge Building and Stonewalling

The concert was preceded by fierce protests by holocaust survivors in Israel, where Wagner’s music has been taboo for decades. The performance turned into a resounding success for the Israel Chamber Orchestra and its Music Director, Roberto Paternostro.

The concert was perceived as a positive signal of rapprochement - on initiative by Roberto Paternostro, the City of Bayreuth and under the patronage of Katharina Wagner.

Newspapers wrote:.. "a piece of music history" .. "a great triumph for the ensemble" .. "historic moment"

Here's an overview about articles, documentations and the recording.
